A crescent of golden sand on Sri Lanka’s south coast, Mirissa is one of the most beautiful small beaches in Asia — and, between November and April, the best place in the world to see blue whales from a boat. The deep-water submarine canyon just offshore creates an extraordinary feeding ground that draws the largest animals ever to have lived on earth within easy sailing distance of the harbour.
Whale Watching
Mirissa’s whale watching season runs from November to April. Blue whale sighting success rates exceed 80% during peak season. Sperm whales, fin whales, Bryde’s whales, and orcas are also regularly sighted, along with large pods of spinner and bottlenose dolphins.
“Our blue whale surfaced fifty metres from the boat and then rolled slowly, the barnacled blue-grey curve of its back seeming to go on and on forever. An absolute privilege.”
The Beach
Even without the whales, Mirissa’s beach is exceptional — a palm-fringed bay of genuine beauty with calm, swimmable waters. The famous Parrot Rock provides excellent snorkelling and extraordinary sunset views.
