Perched at 1,041 metres above sea level in Sri Lanka’s Hill Country, Ella is a small town with an outsized reputation — a haven of cool air, spectacular mountain scenery, tea-scented breezes, and the iconic Nine Arch Bridge. For travellers arriving on the celebrated Kandy to Ella train journey, it marks the journey’s triumphant end.

The Nine Arch Bridge

Built entirely of brick, stone, and cement without a single piece of steel, the Nine Arch Bridge is one of the finest examples of colonial railway construction in Asia. Set amid lush tea gardens with forest-clad hills rising behind, the bridge becomes particularly magical when the blue train passes overhead.

“We watched the train cross the Nine Arch Bridge as the morning mist swirled through the tea gardens. It felt like the most cinematic moment of our lives.”

Little Adam's Peak

The hike to Little Adam’s Peak rewards with sweeping panoramic views across the Hill Country. An accessible 90-minute walk suitable for most fitness levels, best done at sunrise for extraordinary light.
