Sri Lanka has the world’s highest density of wild leopards, and Yala National Park is where you meet them — up close, in the extraordinary theatre of the wild. An early morning Yala safari is one of the defining experiences of Asian wildlife travel.
What to Expect
Safaris typically last three to four hours, conducted in open 4WD vehicles with certified naturalist guides. The experience encompasses far more than just leopard sightings: elephant herds, sloth bears, sambar deer, crocodiles, peacocks, and an extraordinary diversity of waterbirds are all regularly encountered.
“We spotted four separate leopards on our dawn safari — including a mother and cub at a waterhole. Our guide Ranjith had twenty years of Yala experience and it showed.”
Tips for the Best Experience
Book a dawn safari for the best leopard activity. Choose a guide with a proven track record — the difference between an average and an exceptional guide is enormous. Stay at least two nights to maximise sighting opportunities. Bring binoculars and dress in muted, natural colours.
